The brief

The renowned Sirio-Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo is a leader in healthcare in South America and has gained international recognition for its dedication to providing exceptional medical services. To further its commitment, the hospital underwent a major renovation to expand its facilities and services. As part of this upgrade, the hospital opted for an automated waste collection system to streamline waste management and ensure a hygienic environment.

Envac, the waste management solutions provider, won the contract for this innovative project, which marked the first of its kind for a Latin American hospital. Envac developed a custom waste collection system to handle the needs of the hospital’s 650-bed capacity, including two types of waste: general and linen. The new system promises to be a significant upgrade in waste management for the hospital and its patients.

The project

Envac’s pneumatic solution involved the installation of two separate pipe networks at Sirio-Libanes Hospital, one for linen and another for general waste. The hospital, spread over 16 floors, required 116 disposal points to collect waste effectively.

The automated system collects used linen from the disposal points, using airflow, and feeds them to conveyors which transport the trolleys to the laundry rooms. Meanwhile, general waste is carried through the vacuum technology to a waste collection station, where it is placed in hermetically sealed containers and processed.

The entire waste collection process is managed by a central computer which automatically tracks collection levels and frequency. This system provides real-time data to the hospital, which enables it to optimize its waste management operations and ensure a clean, hygienic environment for patients and staff.

The result

The automated waste collection system installed by Envac in 2017 marked a significant milestone for South American hospitals. This solution transported over nine tons of linen and nearly nine tons of general waste every day via a 820 foot-long pipe network, with 116 collection points across the hospital.

One of the most noticeable benefits of the new system was the significant reduction in the time required to manually handle waste. Hospital porters no longer need to push trolleys of waste around the hospital, freeing up more time to focus on front-of-house duties.

The system has contributed to creating a cleaner and more productive hospital environment, while also minimizing operational costs. The use of the hospital elevators was reduced, and the time saved from manual waste transportation was reallocated for other essential tasks.

This fully operational system runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and reflects the Sirio-Libanes Hospital’s commitment to world-class standards. Envac’s innovative solution has become the model for automated waste management in healthcare facilities in South America, paving the way for more sustainable and efficient waste management systems.

The adoption of pneumatic collection is in line with the polices adopted by the Sírio-Libanês Hospital related to the quality of care, patient safety and sustainability. The decision to use the system, taken at the beginning of the expansion of our structure, was one of the factors that contributed to Green Building Gold obtained for the new towers. This is a great innovation in the hospital area in Brazil with important benefits for the operation of our institution.
